In the midst of all the election tension, The Sarah Jane Adventures was the happiest thing today that managed to distract me.
We got to see Clyde's family! At last! I adore his mum, she's just so happy and colorful and it's obvious she and Clyde are best buddies. She's obviously had a tough time raising him on her own and I wasn't surprised to hear he'd been in trouble a lot because of the feelings caused by his dad running off with his aunt (and yikes, not a great father figure there, definitely worse than Martha's dad there), but those scenes with Luke sleeping over at Clyde's just showcased how well things had turned out anyway. They were just adorable.
I love that Clyde can draw but is shy about it. So shy he hadn't even told Luke or Maria about it. And he can cook, too. Not bad for a 15 year-old.
It was a monumentally bad idea for him to tell his dad about what they do with Sarah Jane, but I can see why he did. His dad seems like a bit of a flake (okay, understatement), so he had to pull out the big guns in order to hear that "I'm proud of you". I hope after everything is resolved he'll get to hear his mum say that about him, just b/c he's her kid and she loves him and not b/c he saved the world.
Rani's dad continues to be made of awesome. I really hope he comes around to liking Clyde, though. Everyone should love Clyde.
I want it to be next week now, if only because I hate the thought of Clyde not knowing who Sarah Jane, Luke, Rani, Mariah, etc. are. Though I wonder if he'll only forget Luke and Rani; his dad did tell him to forget "these people" after all and Sarah Jane wasn't around. I'm sure all this will make her think twice about leaving like that. Turning Mr Smith off was perhaps not the right decision.
I thought the random kid at the beginning was going to have more of a role in the story, but I guess not. His voice reminded me of someone but I can't place it.
Honestly, I think I enjoy this series more than the parent show sometimes. It might not cause such intense reactions (still sad over the series 4 finale, for example), but it's solid and tells some damn good stories without talking down to kids or resorting to too many fart jokes. It's diverse and complicated and funny and All About Family, even if it's a cobbled together family you make for yourself.
